An educational adventure that disguises geography lessons within a playful narrative, sending players across the world to track a missing hero while learning about global landmarks and cultures.
Description
Mario Is Missing! is a side-scrolling educational adventure where Luigi takes the spotlight. The game sends Luigi around the globe to recover stolen artefacts and solve geography-based puzzles, all while tracking down Bowser’s whereabouts. It blends platforming elements with city exploration and trivia challenges, aiming to teach world facts through simple interaction. Developed by a third party, it came at a time when regulatory changes gave companies like Nintendo extra reasons to publish such educational software. Originally released for MS-DOS, it was ported to the Super Nintendo the same year; a Macintosh version was released the following year.
Rather than combat or fast-paced action, the focus is on learning e.g. identifying landmarks, returning items to museums, and answering questions. It was designed with younger players in mind than other Mario titles. I played an import copy around the time of its release and was right in the middle of its target demographic. So trying to recollect, I honestly cared little for its repetitiveness or other issues. It was more than engaging but would have been easily lost on older ages.
