Super Metroid

スーパーメトロイド

A 2D action‑adventure and the third entry in the Metroid series, expanding exploration, atmosphere, and non‑linear progression, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest video games of all time.

Description

Super Metroid continues the story of bounty hunter Samus Aran, who travels to planet Zebes after the last surviving Metroid larva is stolen by Ridley. The game unfolds across interconnected regions: Brinstar, Norfair, Maridia, the Wrecked Ship, and Tourian. Each are filled with enemies, puzzles, and secrets. Through exploration you acquire upgrades such as the Morph Ball, Grappling Beam, and Space Jump, which gradually unlock new areas and abilities.

The design emphasises non‑linear progression, encouraging backtracking and discovery rather than a fixed path. Atmospheric storytelling is conveyed through environmental cues, minimal dialogue, and cinematic sequences, including the climactic battle against Mother Brain. The game’s pacing balances combat, exploration, and tension, with a strong emphasis on player agency. Super Metroid showcases the SNES’s capabilities with detailed sprite work, parallax scrolling, and an evocative soundtrack by Kenji Yamamoto and Minako Hamano. The music shifts dynamically between eerie ambience and driving rhythms, reinforcing the sense of isolation and danger.

For its era it had great level design, atmosphere, and innovations in control and exploration. Reception was overwhelmingly positive, selling over 1.4 million copies worldwide. Super Metroid is frequently cited in “greatest games of all time” lists. It and Castlevania/Akumajō Dracula built the “Metroidvania” genre, influencing countless later titles such as Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Hollow Knight, and Axiom Verge. Its design philosophy continues to shape modern action‑adventure games, making it a cornerstone of video game history.
