USB Gigabit Ethernet Adapter
Aftermarket USB 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet (1 Gbit) adapter containing the ASIX AX88179 chipset natively supported by the Nintendo Switch.
Description
The Nintendo Switch natively supports the ASIX AX88179 chipset, which provides a 1 Gbit ethernet interface over USB 3.0. This adapter also features an inbuilt USB 3.0 hub, as at the time it was unclear whether there would be other uses for the single USB 3.0 port on the Nintendo Switch. The Switch OLED and Switch 2 docks removed the USB 3.0 port entirely and replaced it an inbuilt gigabit ethernet interface, removing the need for a separate adapter.
Historically, the Nintendo Wii utilised a standard USB 2.0 to Ethernet interface. The official Ethernet/LAN adapter (RVL-A-UE, RVL-015) made use of the ASIX AX88772 chipset, which supported 100 Mbit ‘Fast Ethernet’. This adapter, and any others with this chipset, were also supported by the Wii U and Switch. The Nintendo Switch quietly added support for the newer AX88179 chipset although an official external adapter was not released.
