USB Ethernet Adapter
Aftermarket USB 2.0 Fast Ethernet (100 Mbit) adapter containing the ASIX AX88772 chipset natively supported by the Wii and later Nintendo consoles.
Description
After the custom GameCube ethernet interface, Nintendo adopted a fairly standard USB 2.0 to Ethernet interface for the Wii and later consoles. The official Ethernet/LAN adapter (RVL-A-UE, RVL-015) made use of the ASIX AX88772 chipset. This supports 100 Mbit ‘Fast Ethernet’. Most third party USB adapters use other chipsets, however any with the AX88772 are compatible. This is cheap and compact third party unit by UGREEN, although there are plenty of others. It provides the best connectivity for both the Wii and Wii U.
The Nintendo Switch also supported the ASIX AX88179 chipset, which moved to USB 3.0 and 1 Gbit gigabit ethernet. The Switch OLED and Switch 2 docks removed the USB 3.0 port and replaced it an inbuilt gigabit ethernet interface. This finally removed the need to purchase separate adapters for those who prefer to avoid Wifi on fixed devices for improved performance.
