Description

SteamWorld Heist II shifts the series from outer-space raiding to a seafaring adventure on the Great Sea, where Captain Quincy Leeway and his crew of Steambots investigate a worsening water crisis that is mysteriously corroding metal bodies and mechanical hearts. As with other entries in the SteamWorld universe, the tone mixes light humour, eccentric robot characters, and a broader mystery, but this sequel places greater emphasis on Leeway’s role as captain and on the threats facing botkind across a connected maritime world.

The core of the game remains side-scrolling, turn-based tactical combat built around manual aiming and ricocheting bullets, but the sequel expands the formula with a much larger adventure structure. Between missions, players now steer a submarine across an explorable overworld, engage in real-time naval battles, raid enemy positions, gather loot, and visit taverns to recruit crew mates, improve equipment, and manage progression. A new job system and a pool of more than 150 weapons, items, and upgrades deepen customisation, allowing crews to be tailored for different styles of play while preserving the series’ trademark trick-shot gunplay.

The game was received well as an ambitious and successful expansion of the original SteamWorld Heist, with praise for its handmade maps, flexible class-building, presentation, and soundtrack, even if some reviewers felt the larger scale occasionally introduced pacing issues or extra grind. In that sense, it is less as a simple follow-up and more as a confident evolution of the original’s tactical ideas into a broader, more feature-rich strategy adventure.
