A realistic golf simulation focused on strategic club selection and shot accuracy, with a 3D perspective emphasising course depth and terrain. Released in the US simply as ‘Golf’. This was the most expensive Japanese Virtual Boy game by retail price.
Description
T&E Virtual Golf is one of the more polished releases on the Virtual Boy despite its niche appeal. It places players in the fictional Papillion Golf & Country Club, offering a full 18‑hole course with hazards like sand traps, water, and rough terrain. Gameplay adheres to traditional golf rules, but the Virtual Boy’s stereoscopic 3D display was used to provide depth perception when lining up shots. Players could choose between Tournament Mode, competing against 47 AI opponents, or Stroke Mode, aiming to beat personal records. The interface allowed adjustments to stance, swing power, club selection, and ball impact point, with wind speed and course layout displayed onscreen. Multiple camera perspectives and a grid system for aiming gave the game a surprising level of depth compared to other Virtual Boy titles.
The game feature good controls and physics, particularly the ball behaviour feels realistic. Criticisms about the game seem to be more about the Virtual Boy itself. Nintendo Power ranked it the third‑best Virtual Boy release of 1995, which speaks both to its relative quality and the console’s limited catalogue.
