Wii Party U (Nintendo Selects)

Wiiパーティ U

A multiplayer party game that uses the Wii U GamePad, Wii Remotes, and television to turn the living room into a board game table and game show floor. Its broad collection of board games, tabletop contests, and more than 80 minigames makes it one of the console’s most substantial local multiplayer releases.

Description

Wii Party U is a sequel to Wii Party and it features more than eighty mini‑games designed to showcase the Wii U’s hardware, particularly the GamePad. The game divides its content into several categories: traditional board‑game style activities played on the television, “House Party” modes that encourage physical interaction with Wii Remotes, and “GamePad Party” challenges that use the controller as a tabletop device for two players. To support tabletop play, Nintendo originally included a plastic stand so the GamePad could be placed flat on a table, emphasising the console’s second‑screen potential.

The presentation is bright and cheerful, with Mii avatars at the centre of the experience and Party Phil returning as host to guide players through the various modes. Critics praised the variety of mini‑games and the inventive use of the GamePad, though they often noted that the package lacked the depth and polish of the Mario Party series. Commercially, the game sold around 1.8 million copies, modest compared to the Wii’s runaway successes but large for the Wii U install base. Retrospectively, Wii Party U was part of Nintendo’s broader strategy to broaden the Wii U’s appeal to families and casual audiences. Alongside Nintendo Land, it demonstrates the console’s distinctive features and attempts to recapture the inclusive, living‑room energy of the Wii era. Ultimately however, it was most limited by the Wii U’s overall struggles.

Item note: The original release was bundled with a Wii Remote at $69.95 in Australia on 26 October 2013, while the budget reprint ‘Nintendo Selects’ version had the game only for $49.95. This was initially acquired disc only for $0.5 on final clearance so could have come from either release.
