Sing Party

Description

SiNG Party launched in North America alongside the console but reached Europe a few months later. It contains 50 licensed songs across several decades and genres. Despite announced plans to expand the selection through downloadable content, no additional songs were released. The physical release included a wired USB microphone, although several microphones previously released for Wii singing games are also compatible.

The main Party Mode displays lyrics and performance cues on the GamePad, freeing the singer to move around and face the audience rather than watch the television. Meanwhile, the television gives the remaining players prompts to sing backing parts, clap, and perform simple dance movements. Sing Mode offers a more conventional karaoke arrangement for solo singers or duets, displaying lyrics and pitch guides on the television while evaluating pitch, power, and vocal variation. Two additional players can shake Wii Remotes as percussion instruments, while another person can use the GamePad to manage the playlist and adjust audio levels. Team Mode divides participants into competing groups and rotates them through different singing and performance challenges, while Practice Mode allows difficult sections of individual songs to be rehearsed.

The use of the GamePad is most successful in Party Mode, where separating the singer’s lyrics from the audience’s prompts creates a more social form of karaoke and avoids having every participant stare at the same screen. The broad soundtrack provides material suitable for different ages despite never being expanded. However, the game offers little lasting progression beyond scores, ratings, and minor awards, with only one difficulty level and all songs available from the beginning. The Wii Remote percussion and touchscreen rhythm functions are nice touches but add little substance. SiNG Party works best with a group willing to participate in its audience prompts, but is a comparatively sparse experience to deeper competitive rhythm games or an expansive karaoke libraries.
