Virtua Fighter History / VF4

バーチャファイターヒストリー / ブイエフ4

A bonus disc compilation of Virtua Fighter media and promotional content, distributed exclusively with the Shenmue II Limited Edition in Japan. Unlike the Virtua Fighter 4 Passport, this item comes in an empty case. It lacks a SKU but does have the disc part number.

Description

Virtua Fighter History / VF4 was a supplemental GD‑ROM packaged with the Shokai Genteiban (first‑print limited edition) of Shenmue II for the Dreamcast in September 2001. Developed by Sega AM2 and CRI, the disc functioned as a hybrid of retrospective and promotional material, celebrating the Virtua Fighter series while advertising the then‑new Virtua Fighter 4.

The disc included a curated selection of music and video content from across the franchise, covering Virtua Fighter, Virtua Fighter 2, Virtua Fighter 3, and Virtua Fighter Kids. These assets highlighted the evolution of the series’ characters, stages, and mechanics, offering fans a historical overview of Sega’s pioneering 3D fighting games. Alongside this retrospective material, the disc also contained promotional trailers and assets for Virtua Fighter 4, which had launched in Japanese arcades earlier in 2001 and was preparing for its PlayStation 2 release.

As a non‑interactive demo disc, Virtua Fighter History / VF4 did not feature playable content but instead served as a multimedia archive and marketing tool. Its inclusion with Shenmue II reflected Sega’s strategy of cross‑promoting its flagship properties on the Dreamcast during the console’s final year in Japan. Virtua Fighter History / VF4 remains notable as both a promotional artefact and a preservation of Sega’s fighting game legacy, bridging the transition from the Dreamcast era to the PlayStation 2 generation.
