Visual Memory Unit
ビジュアルメモリThe official memory device designed for the Sega Dreamcast. It is multifunctional, combining save-data storage with auxiliary display and standalone mini-game functionality. This is a transparent blue unit in North American packaging.
Description
The Visual Memory Unit features a compact form with an LCD screen, control buttons, and a connector for insertion into the Dreamcast controller. It stores game progress while providing real-time status displays during play, such as health meters or inventory icons. When removed, it operates as a handheld device for mini-games downloaded from compatible titles, reinforcing Sega’s emphasis on cross-platform interaction.
Branding varied by region: marketed as Visual Memory System in Japan and Visual Memory in PAL territories, while North America adopted the term Visual Memory Unit (VMU). Despite naming differences, all versions share identical hardware specifications and the same base model (HKT-7000). They include 128 KB of flash memory and a CR2032 battery for powering the LCD when detached. The device connects via the controller’s expansion slots and two units can connect directly for data exchange between units or even battling. The units supported having one application installed on them, generally from a Dreamcast game. They often were Tamagotchi style games or included a clock or similar, with progress able to be synced to the main game.
Contemporary reception praised its novelty and integration with gameplay, though the battery life and limited standalone functionality were its weak points. Retrospectively the VMU as one of Sega’s most distinctive accessories, with its hybrid design and its role in defining the Dreamcast’s identity as an innovative console.
