A sports simulation built around fast rallies, responsive controls, and the presentation of professional tennis tournaments. It broadly expanded the features of the highly successful predecessor.

Description

Virtua Tennis 2 expands the original arcade release by introducing female professional players and mixed doubles matches, broadening the scope of competition. The game presents a world tour mode where players create a custom character, train across mini‑games, and compete in tournaments to rise through the rankings. Licensed athletes such as Tim Henman, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Serena Williams, and Martina Hingis are included, giving the roster a more international feel.

Gameplay is characterised by simple, intuitive controls that allow for lobs, volleys, and powerful groundstrokes, with the emphasis on timing and positioning rather than complex input combinations. The Dreamcast version retains the arcade immediacy of the series while adding depth through career progression, training exercises, and unlockable courts. It is often compared with contemporaries such as Top Spin and Mario Tennis, highlighting differences between simulation realism and stylised play.

Contemporary reception praised the expanded roster and the addition of female players, noting that the world tour mode gave the game longevity beyond its arcade roots. Retrospectively Virtua Tennis 2 was one of the Dreamcast’s standout sports titles. Highly accessible mechanics yet competitive multiplayer, along with excellent graphics, made it a defining tennis game of its era.
