Sega AM2’s hyper-realistic Ferrari racing simulator, originally an arcade showcase with a triple-screen cabinet and later ported to Dreamcast, faithfully recreating the feel of the Ferrari F355 Challenge race car.

Description

F355 Challenge Passione Rossa is a port of Yu Suzuki’s NAOMI-based arcade game preserved the original’s demanding simulation physics, cockpit-only view, and “Magic Weather” system. While the arcade’s triple-screen immersion wasn’t possible on a single home display, Sega compensated with meticulous handling realism and a suite of assists for newcomers. This PAL edition shipped with the same core content as the original Japanese release, including multiple real-world circuits and the in-game radio hosted by fictional DJ Alan J.

One standout feature was its Dreamcast link cable support allowing two consoles each with its own copy of the game, a TV, and optional race controller to be connected directly for head-to-head races. Although it is note the PAL version had the feature hidden – albeit very easily unlockable. This feature gave each competitor a full, uninterrupted screen, closely echoing the arcade’s multi-screen feel. Combined with its precision driving model and authentic Ferrari licensing, the game became a showcase for the Dreamcast’s ability to deliver arcade-quality simulation at home, especially for players willing to invest in the ultimate two-system racing setup. We had it and played back in the day. There was really only one minor oversight: you could choose between playing in VGA / 480p or in anamorphic widescreen (in 480i), but not at the same time. It was unfortunate as there seems no technical reason for this limitation and was later overridden with a community patch.
