Assault City

A rail shooter that casts the player in the middle of a robot uprising, offering both light gun and controller support across two distinct cartridge versions. Second edition, supporting Light Phaser in lieu of the game pad. Japan developed but only released in PAL territories.

Description

Assault City tells the story of a near‑future revolt in which robots, once designed for labour and domestic service, turn against humanity under the influence of a corrupted control system. Players take the role of Joe, one of the last human fighters, tasked with dismantling the enemy’s strongholds and restoring order. The game unfolds as a scrolling shooter, with enemies appearing from the edges of the screen as the background steadily moves forward. Two editions were released: one compatible only with the standard controller, and another that supported the Light Phaser peripheral, this one is the latter. The opening challenge stage even adjusts the difficulty based on the player’s accuracy, a feature that feels well ahead of its time.

Visually and thematically it borrows heavily from the robot‑apocalypse narratives popularised by films like The Terminator, with industrial backdrops, mechanical enemies, and boss encounters that break apart piece by piece under sustained fire. Compared to earlier light gun titles such as Duck Hunt or Safari Hunt, it attempted to add more cinematic framing and narrative context, though the scrolling format limited variety. Its design sits alongside other Master System experiments with the Light Phaser, like Rescue Mission and Gangster Town, which similarly tried to expand the scope of home light gun play beyond simple target galleries.

Magazines both praised its accuracy and boss design but criticised repetitive early stages and rushed story sequences. Being a PAL only release, it remains a less known yet solid game that tried to push the light gun genre forward but remained bound by the hardware’s limitations.
