A landmark 1992 Sega tactical RPG that blends grid‑based strategy with JRPG exploration, remembered for its accessible mechanics, mythic story, and enduring influence on the genre.
Description
Shining Force: The Legacy of Great Intention is the second entry in the Shining series, following Shining in the Darkness, although this is the first tactical RPG the series is known for. The Japanese subtitle, Kamigami no Isan (神々の遺産), translates literally as “The Legacy of the Gods,” although its stylised English title, and the Western release, adopt the phrasing “The Legacy of Great Intention.”
The game combines traditional JRPG exploration with turn‑based tactical battles fought on grid maps. Players command the “Shining Force,” a growing band of heroes led by the silent protagonist Max, as they resist the ambitions of the Runefaust Empire and its attempt to resurrect the Dark Dragon. Each character has a distinct class, personality, and progression path, with promotion mechanics allowing units to evolve into more powerful forms. Between battles, players explore towns, recruit allies, purchase equipment, and uncover story details, giving the game a hybrid structure that distinguished it from contemporaries.
Shining Force blends high fantasy with light science‑fiction elements, presenting a world of knights, mages, and monsters alongside ancient technology and sealed evils. Its narrative of resistance against tyranny and the awakening of forgotten powers gave it a mythic tone, while its accessible mechanics made it a gateway into the tactical RPG genre for many Western players. Reception at release was highly positive, with its colourful graphics, memorable soundtrack, and balance between strategy and accessibility. It has since been re‑released on multiple platforms, including the Game Boy Advance remake Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon (2004), and remains one of Sega’s most celebrated RPGs.
