Laser Ghost is about battling supernatural creatures in haunted environments using the Light Phaser peripheral. The player takes the role of a ghost hunter moving through side‑scrolling stages such as graveyards, haunted houses, and eerie streets, where ghosts, skeletons, and other apparitions appear suddenly and must be shot before they overwhelm the screen. The background story is minimal, but the game has a clear theme on cleansing cursed locations of malevolent spirits.

The gameplay presents a series of scrolling stages where players use the Light Phaser peripheral to target supernatural enemies across haunted houses, graveyards, and other horror settings. The arcade original had a more elaborate setup, with three players simultaneously using mounted light guns to protect a young girl from waves of monsters. The Master System adaptation reworks this into a single‑player progression, focusing on precision shooting and reflexes rather than cooperative defense. The essence of the game is its horror atmosphere combined with light gun spectacle, situating the player as an exorcist figure confronting waves of supernatural foes.
