Magic Knight Rayearth Limited Edition

ほう レイアース げんていばん

A role‑playing adaptation of the popular manga and anime story, combining action combat with a faithful retelling of the narrative, and presenting themes of friendship, courage, and magical destiny in a limited edition package.

Description

Magic Knight Rayearth Limited Edition adapts CLAMP’s popular anime and manga series. It follows the story of three schoolgirls transported to a fantasy realm, blending action-based combat with narrative-driven exploration. The game features hand-drawn cutscenes, voice acting, and a stylised presentation that closely mirrors the source material, making it one of the earliest anime tie-in titles to fully leverage the Saturn’s CD-ROM capabilities.

The game’s development was notably delayed, originally intended as a launch title for the Saturn in late 1994. There were challenges adapting the anime’s episodic structure into a cohesive game format, while also incorporating animated sequences and voice work that pushed the limits of early CD-ROM storage and processing. These delays resulted in the game launching nearly a year after the console’s debut, but its final release was praised for its fidelity to the original series and its polished audiovisual presentation.

Working Designs eventually released an English version in North America in 1998,  quite late in the Saturn’s lifecycle and was never distributed in PAL regions. The delay and limited scope of international releases reflect broader industry hesitations around niche RPGs and anime tie-ins during that period.

The Limited Edition includes a bundled fan art book and labels for a Saturn power memory / backup memory cartridge.
