A port of Sega’s groundbreaking arcade light gun shooting built around cinematic police action It brings real‑time 3D polygon graphics and precision shooting to home consoles.
Description
Virtua Cop was one of the first shooters to abandon digitised sprites in favour of fully polygonal enemies and environments. The game presents a crime‑fighting story where players step into the role of police officers Michael Hardy or James Cools, tasked with dismantling an organised crime syndicate through a series of urban stages.
Gameplay is presented from a first‑person perspective and uses a rail system that moves the player through environments while enemies appear dynamically, with a coloured reticle indicating threat levels. The player’s revolver holds six bullets, requiring frequent reloads by aiming off‑screen, although temporary weapon upgrades such as shotguns or automatics can be collected during missions. Boss encounters punctuate each stage, culminating in a showdown with syndicate leader Joe Fang.
The Saturn version replicates the arcade original’s polygonal graphics and introduces a Training Mode and a shooting gallery with randomised targets that extends replay value. It supports the Virtua Gun peripheral, which allows direct aiming like the arcade original. The Saturn version and also adds support for the Saturn mouse providing an alternate control method. The port is often compared with contemporaries like Time Crisis, which introduced cover mechanics, and The House of the Dead, which added horror themes.
At release in Japan, the Saturn edition was praised for its faithful recreation of the arcade experience and its smooth technical performance. At the time the novelty of polygonal enemies and the precision of the Virtua Gun both received praise. Retrospectively, an early but defining action shooter for the Saturn. The sequel Virtua Cop 2 further refined the package, with both games remaining very playable today.
