Clockwork Knight 2
クロックワーク ナイト ~ペパルーチョのA platformer developed by Sega’s Team Clockwork, continues the toy‑box adventure of Pepperouchau, the clockwork knight, as he battles through household environments to rescue Princess Chelsea.
Description
Clockwork Knight 2 game picks up immediately after the events of the first title, with Pepperouchau pursuing Chelsea’s kidnappers into new settings. The story unfolds across four themed worlds, each divided into multiple stages, including kitchens, gardens, and toy‑filled bedrooms. The environments are rendered in 3D‑style graphics, but gameplay remains side‑scrolling, blending traditional platforming with Saturn‑era visual flair. The game has a colourful, toy‑like aesthetic and smooth animation, showcasing the Saturn’s ability to blend 2D sprites with 3D backgrounds.
Mechanically, it refines the formula of the original Clockwork Knight. Pepperouchau wields his trusty key‑blade to attack enemies, open locks, and interact with objects. The sequel introduces new moves and power‑ups, such as the ability to charge attacks and ride toy vehicles in certain stages. Boss battles are more elaborate, often requiring pattern recognition and environmental interaction. The game also includes a bonus mode called “Bosses Galore”, where players can re‑fight bosses in sequence, and a hidden “Ranking Mode” that tracks performance across levels. These additions gave the sequel more replay value than the original.
The PAL version of this game is a localisation of the Japanese game. Curiously, this differs from the US release. Not long after the PAL release, a compilation of both Clockwork Knight games were released in Japan. This compilation was the basis of the North American release of Clockwork Knight 2, with the first game hidden. Clockwork Knight titles received a mixed reception at the time but were significant as one of Sega Saturn’s early platformers that demonstrated Sega’s push for console‑exclusive content in the mid‑1990s.
