Description
Nippon Daihyō Team no Kantoku ni Narō! Sekaihatsu Soccer RPG (Let’s Become the Manager of the Japanese National Team! World’s First Football RPG) is a unique hybrid of sports simulation and role-playing. Developed by TOSE in collaboration with Sega and Enix, it aimed to capitalise on the excitement of Japan’s first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance. It remains a fascinating piece as it represents a rare crossover between the arcade-centric Sega and the RPG-focused Enix.
The gameplay contains a deep managerial loop where you take control of the Japanese national team. Unlike traditional football titles, the experience focuses on the journey of the manager rather than direct control of the players during matches. You navigate various environments in an isometric perspective to scout talent, negotiate with clubs, and discover “hidden” players across different countries. The atmosphere is professional yet approachable, the primary drivers of success are character growth and tactical preparation as you progress through the story.
On a mechanical level, the game features a comprehensive suite of training and strategy tools. You manage player fatigue, individual skill development, and squad chemistry to prepare for international fixtures. The match engine presents games in a “TV coverage” style, where the outcome is determined by your tactical decisions and the underlying statistics of your players. This technical framework prioritises the long-term development of the squad, allowing you to witness the technical progress of your team as they climb the global rankings.
Nippon Daihyō Team no Kantoku ni Narō! was noted for its ambitious attempt to blend two seemingly disparate genres. Reviews highlighted the depth of the scouting system and the novelty of the “Football RPG” concept, though some pointed out the steep learning curve for those unfamiliar with Enix’s traditional menu-heavy interfaces. Retrospectively it remains a notable entry in the Saturn’s NTSC-J library, documenting the creative synergy between Sega and Enix during the final years of the Saturn’s life cycle.
