A compilation of two of Konami’s arcade scrolling shooters from the TwinBee series. It was the third major Deluxe Pack on Saturn, following Gradius and Parodius.
Description
Detana TwinBee Yahho! Deluxe Pack is a high-fidelity vertical-scrolling shooter compilation that consolidates two major arcade entries from the “cute ’em up” franchise into a single disc: the 1991 hit Detana!! TwinBee (originally released in the West as Bells & Whistles) and its 1995 successor TwinBee Yahho! Fushigi no Kuni de Daiabare!!. It marks the first time TwinBee Yahho! was made available for a home console.
The gameplay contains two distinct iterations of the series’ signature bell-power-up mechanics. In both titles, you pilot the craft TwinBee or WinBee through vibrant, anime-inspired environments, juggling floating bells to change their colours and unlock specific weapons or speed boosts. While Detana!! follows a traditional structure with seven stages, TwinBee Yahho! introduces a significantly faster pace, allowing you to select between different charged shots and difficulty modes before starting. The experience is defined by its bright, whimsical atmosphere and its focus on two-player cooperative play, where you can perform combined attacks by bumping your ships together.
The Saturn version delivers arcade-perfect ports that take full advantage of the console’s 2D sprite-pushing power. A significant functional addition to the Yahho! portion is the inclusion of expanded voice acting for the pilots, Light and Pastel, who provide real-time commentary and dialogue during the action. The game’s framework prioritises a direct translation of the arcade visuals, though it lacks a “tate” or vertical monitor mode, instead opting for a slightly pillared display to maintain the original aspect ratio. Both games feature high-quality FMV opening sequences and melodic soundtracks that showcase the series’ shift toward a more cinematic presentation in the mid-90s.
Upon its release, Detana TwinBee Yahho! Deluxe Pack was praised for its technical polish and the novelty of having a pixel-perfect version of Yahho! at home. Magazine reviewers highlighted the vibrant art style and the addictive nature of the cooperative play, though some noted that the games were relatively short. Today, it remains a highly sought-after piece of the NTSC-J library, documenting a period when Konami’s “Deluxe Pack” series set the standard for arcade-to-home compilations.
