A cinematic real‑time strategy game that reimagines the Three Kingdoms saga with sweeping battles, political intrigue, and over‑the‑top fantasy warfare. Its magic‑driven combat and dramatic reinterpretations make it the most unconventional entry in the Kessen series.
Description
Kessen II is a sequel in name only to the original Kessen. Whereas the first game depicted historical conflicts in Japan, this entry blends historical themes from China’s Three Kingdoms period with heavy fantastical embellishments such as magic attacks, cinematic battle sequences, and dramatised character arcs. The narrative centres on Liu Bei’s rebellion against Cao Cao, but diverges significantly from the source novel, introducing a romantic subplot with Diao Chan and a prominent role for the sorceress Himiko. Players control officers and armies in large-scale battlefield scenarios, issuing tactical commands while triggering cutscene-laden special moves and branching story outcomes. Compared to its predecessor’s focus on realism and Japanese Sengoku warfare, Kessen II shifts into an operatic tone, drawing more inspiration from fiction and legend than strict historical simulation.
Gameplay unfolds as a sequence of large‑scale battles linked by cinematic cutscenes. Before each engagement, players choose strategic plans, then command units in real time while the AI handles most movement and combat unless the player intervenes directly. Unlike the grounded approach of the first game, this sequel embraces fantasy elements: key strategists such as Zhuge Liang and Sima Yi wield magic abilities capable of summoning lightning, causing earthquakes, or launching fireballs, dramatically altering the flow of battle. These mechanics, combined with the game’s emphasis on spectacle, give it a distinct identity within Koei’s broader Three Kingdoms‑themed catalogue.
At release, Kessen II drew attention for its cinematic presentation and bold shift toward fantasy, though some players expecting a more historical or tactical experience found the changes divisive. Retrospectively, it is often remembered as the most stylistically unusual entry in the trilogy—valued for its dramatic flair and accessible real‑time structure, even if its fantastical reinterpretation sets it apart from Koei’s more traditional strategy titles.
