An open‑world action‑adventure game set in Liberty City, it follows Eastern European immigrant Niko Bellic as he becomes entangled in crime and corruption while pursuing the American Dream.
Description
Grand Theft Auto IV marks a major technical and narrative leap for the series. Built on Rockstar’s RAGE engine, it presents a detailed reimagining of Liberty City, inspired by New York, with dynamic weather, realistic physics, and a living urban environment. The story centres on Niko Bellic, a war veteran arriving in America to reunite with his cousin Roman. Initially seeking a fresh start, Niko is drawn into the criminal underworld, confronting betrayal, moral dilemmas, and the tension between survival and ideals.
Gameplay blends open‑world freedom with structured missions. Players can explore Liberty City’s boroughs, drive vehicles, engage in combat, and interact with diverse characters. The game introduces refined shooting mechanics, cover systems, and more realistic driving physics compared to earlier entries. Side activities include dating, friendships, vigilante missions, and mini‑games such as bowling or darts, all contributing to immersion in the city’s social fabric. The Windows version expands features with higher resolutions and modding potential, although has had pretty poor performance and support over its life.
Multiplayer was a significant addition to GTA IV, with Grand Theft Auto Online offering competitive and cooperative modes across Liberty City, from death matches to race events. This service would later continue with GTA V.
Reception to GTA IV was overwhelmingly positive, with praise for its narrative depth, technical achievements, and the richness of Liberty City. It won multiple Game of the Year awards and is often cited as one of the most influential titles of its generation. Two episodic expansions — The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony — further broadened the story, exploring Liberty City through different perspectives.
