Description
Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection was an enhanced port and remaster of the Naughty Dog series lead by Bluepoint Games. It bundled Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception into a single package. Each was rebuilt to run at 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second. The collection was designed to modernise the trilogy for new audiences while providing a consistent experience across all three titles.
Bluepoint’s work went beyond simple upscaling. Textures, lighting, and character models were overhauled, while cutscenes were re‑rendered to take advantage of the PlayStation 4’s hardware. Gameplay systems were also refined: aiming and grenade mechanics from Drake’s Fortune were reworked to match the smoother feel of the sequels, while camera behaviour in Drake’s Deception was adjusted for consistency. Control schemes were unified across the trilogy, ensuring that players could move seamlessly between games without relearning mechanics. The collection introduced several new features. A Photo Mode allowed players to pause the action and capture customised screenshots, while new difficulty settings, Explorer for accessibility and Brutal for extreme challenge, expanded the range of play styles. A Speed Run mode was also added, encouraging time‑based competition. Additional trophies were included to reflect the new content, and the soundtrack was enhanced for surround sound systems.
Multiplayer, present in Uncharted 2 and Uncharted 3 on PlayStation 3, was omitted from the remasters. The focus was entirely on the single‑player campaigns, aligning with Sony’s strategy of positioning the collection as a narrative showcase leading into Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. Pre‑orders of the collection granted access to the multiplayer beta of that sequel, reinforcing its role as both a preservation project and a promotional bridge.
The collection was well received, with faithful but welcome visual improvements, smoother performance, and the general refinements, which particularly made Drake’s Fortune feel less dated. Despite the absence of multiplayer and additional extras, the collection is widely regarded as a definitive edition of the trilogy. Commercially, it performed strongly, helping to reintroduce the series to players ahead of its PlayStation 4 continuation. It is both a remaster but also a consolidation of the series’ identity that preserved and standardised the trilogy’s experience.
