Dragon Quest Heroes II (Explorer’s Edition)

ドラゴンクエストヒーローズII ふたおうげんわりわりやくとくてん

An action-RPG that blends real-time combat with light party management, set against a backdrop of high fantasy and kingdom unrest.

Description

Dragon Quest Heroes II is Omega Force’s second action‑RPG spin‑off of Square Enix’s long‑running Dragon Quest series, blending Musou‑style hack‑and‑slash combat with traditional RPG elements. While rooted in Dragon Quest lore, the game focuses less on traditional turn-based mechanics and more on fast-paced skirmishes across interconnected battle zones.

Unlike the first Dragon Quest Heroes, which was more of a straightforward crossover brawler, Heroes II expands into a semi‑open world structure. Players explore interconnected regions, fight hordes of monsters in large‑scale battles, and undertake story quests that tie into a new narrative rather than simply revisiting familiar characters. The game introduces two new protagonists, cousins Lazarel and Teresa, who are joined by classic Dragon Quest heroes such as Torneko, Maribel, and Angelo.

Mechanically, it refines the formula by adding multiplayer co‑op for up to four players, more diverse mission types, and a class system that allows the protagonists to change jobs (warrior, martial artist, mage, etc.), echoing the traditional RPG roots of the series. Combat remains fast and flashy, with Musou‑style crowd clearing, but the job system and skill progression add depth beyond button‑mashing.

The game continues the celebratory tone of the first entry, a kind of festival of Dragon Quest history. However it grounds it in a more coherent narrative about warring kingdoms and the threat of a demonic invasion. Its story is lighter than the mainline series but still carries the charm and humour that define Dragon Quest.

It was praised the improvements over the first game, especially the addition of co‑op and the job system, though some noted that the Musou formula could still feel repetitive. Fans of the series appreciated the nostalgic character roster. It came late in the PS4’s pre-Pro cycle but carried enhancements for higher-end setups, balancing nostalgic character cameos with updated visuals and performance tuning. It later received patches for the PS4 Pro. In retrospect, Dragon Quest Heroes II was a more ambitious and balanced experiment than its predecessor and a celebratory spin‑off that successfully married Koei Tecmo’s action design with Square Enix’s RPG heritage.
