Universal Media Remote

A dedicated accessory designed to streamline media playback and home entertainment control, offering a more traditional remote experience than a game controller.

Description

The PS4’s Universal Media Remote was an officially licensed peripheral that connected to the console via Bluetooth while also using infrared to operate televisions, set‑top boxes, and audio receivers. It allowed users to manage up to four devices at once, consolidating control of the console and common living‑room hardware. The remote included the familiar PlayStation face buttons, Share, Options, and PS buttons, alongside standard media keys for play, pause, fast‑forward, and volume. Its design was intended to make navigating streaming apps such as Netflix, YouTube, and Crunchyroll more intuitive, especially for households that used the PS4 as a primary entertainment hub.

Two AAA batteries powered the device, and pairing required a system software update on the console. The remote could switch seamlessly between devices, with features like allowing volume control without changing modes. Compared to earlier console remotes, such as those for the PlayStation 2 DVD playback kit or the Xbox 360’s media remote, it represented a more integrated approach, reflecting the PS4’s role as both a gaming machine and a multimedia centre.
