Manual
An adaptor for PlayStation 4 cameras to USB, enabling PS VR on the PS5. Sony provided them freely via request.
Description
The PlayStation Camera Adaptor was introduced so that owners of the original PlayStation Camera for PS4 could keep using it on a PS5, specifically for PlayStation VR when playing supported PS4 VR titles in backwards compatibility mode. The PS5’s new HD Camera isn’t compatible with PSVR, so if you wanted to use your existing PSVR headset, Move or Aim controller on PS5, you still needed the PS4 camera. The hitch was that the PS4 camera couldn’t plug directly into a PS5, hence the need for the adaptor.
On PS4, the camera didn’t use a standard USB plug it connected via the console’s “AUX” port, a proprietary connector that was essentially a USB 3.0 interface in a different shape. Sony did this partly to reserve that port exclusively for the camera (avoiding confusion with other USB devices) and to ensure the necessary bandwidth without sharing it with other peripherals. When PS5 dropped the AUX port entirely, the only way to connect the older camera was through the free adaptor Sony offered to PS VR owners.
The only drawback was the initial waiting period. I, like many, requested this free adaptor immediately in mid-November 2020 but it look nearly 3 months for Sony to deliver.
