PlayStation Portable Value Pack

Sony Computer Entertainment launched the PlayStation Portable in Japan on 12 December 2004, specifically the PSP‑1000 model as its first dedicated handheld console. Alongside the base “Standard Pack,” Sony also offered the Value Pack (PSP‑1000K), which was positioned as the premium launch bundle.

The Value Pack contained the PSP‑1000 handheld system in black, accompanied by a set of accessories designed to showcase the system’s multimedia capabilities. These included a 32 MB Memory Stick Duo, a soft carrying pouch, a wrist strap, and a headphone set with in‑line remote control. The memory card, albeit very small by later standards, provided save memory in addition to a limited amount of media storage. The remote setup made it feel more like a Walkman or Minidisc.

The Value Pack was priced higher than the Standard Pack but was marketed as the more complete option, ensuring that early adopters had the necessary storage and accessories to take advantage of the PSP’s broader role as a portable entertainment device, not just a game console. The presentation of the Value Pack also reinforced Sony’s positioning of the PSP as a sleek, lifestyle‑oriented product, competing not only with Nintendo’s handhelds but also with portable media players of the era.

The Japanese launch was accompanied by a strong software line‑up, including titles such as Ridge Racers, Lumines, and Dynasty Warriors. Pre-ordering this thing was surprisingly not that expensive given the hype around the product. The overall quality of the package left few people with regrets.
