Memory Stick Duo (32 MB)

メモリースティック デュオ(32MB)

A flash memory storage device packaged with the PSP for both saving games and multimedia integration within the new handheld gaming system.

Description

The bundled Memory Stick Duo (32 MB) with the PlayStation Portable functions as the default removable storage included with early PSP hardware sets. It provides limited capacity for save data, small media files, and system updates, serving as an introduction to the console’s reliance on external flash memory rather than internal storage. The format is a reduced‑size variant of Sony’s Memory Stick standard, designed to fit the PSP’s dedicated slot and to be compatible with adapters for use in other Sony devices.

Practically the 32 MB capacity accommodates only a handful of save files and minimal multimedia content, encouraging users to purchase larger sticks for expanded use. The inclusion of this small unit demonstrates Sony’s intent to familiarise players with the Memory Stick ecosystem while ensuring immediate functionality out of the box. At launch flash media was already available over 1 GB at the time, even in Sony’s proprietary format, making 32 MB seem nearly tokenistic.

Contemporary reception noted the bundled stick’s insufficiency for serious media storage, particularly given the PSP’s positioning as a portable multimedia device. Critics observed that the limited capacity forced early adopters to invest quickly in higher‑capacity accessories, which was seen as a deliberate strategy to drive peripheral sales. Although I would have preferred SD media, at the time I had both a Sony camera and Sony HDTV, so I received some benefits from using the Memory Stick ecosystem. Ultimately I purchased a 1 or 2 GB card that was more than sufficient for my primarily gaming use case.
