Description
Star Ocean: Second Evolution is an enhanced version of Star Ocean: The Second Story (1998, PlayStation), which is a sequel to Star Ocean: First Departure. It retains the dual‑protagonist structure, allowing players to begin the story as either Claude C. Kenny, a young officer from an interstellar federation, or Rena Lanford, a girl from the underdeveloped planet Expel. Their perspectives shape the unfolding narrative, which follows a journey across multiple worlds and culminates in a confrontation with the Ten Wise Men, a group of antagonists whose names and presentation were altered in this version to reflect cultural sensitivities. The remake introduces new animated cutscenes, redrawn character portraits, and full voice acting for major story events, giving the tale a more cinematic quality than its predecessor.
Second Evolution refines the real‑time battle system with adjustments to skills and special moves, while also adding new abilities such as Sidestep and Concentration to deepen combat strategy. Item creation, a hallmark of the series, is preserved and streamlined, and a new recruitable character, Welch Vineyard, expands the roster of optional allies. Private Actions return, allowing players to influence relationships between party members and unlock multiple endings, reinforcing the game’s replay value. Compared to contemporaries like Tales of Eternia on PSP or the remakes of Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy V, Second Evolution stands out for its combination of branching narrative, flexible party composition, and a battle system that rewards both reflexes and planning.
It received praise for its updated visuals, voice work, and the way it preserves the depth of the original while making it more approachable. The only issues people had were that the dated pacing and design elements remained evident. Overall it successfully revitalises one of the most celebrated entries in the Star Ocean series.
