Media Remote

メディア リモコン

An infrared accessory designed to control DVD playback, dashboard navigation, and basic TV functions, released alongside the console to position the Xbox 360 as a living‑room media hub.

Description

When the Xbox 360 launched in late 2005, Microsoft emphasised its role not just as a gaming machine but as a multimedia centre. The Media Remote was central to this vision. Shaped like a slim, white television remote, it featured a sleek, ergonomic design taking a cue from Windows Media Center. It provided a layout that combined traditional remote functions with Xbox‑specific controls. The remote was powered by two AAA batteries and communicated via infrared (IR), meaning it required line‑of‑sight to the console’s IR receiver. Unlike the original Xbox, which required a separate dongle for DVD playback, the Xbox 360 had IR functionality built in, making the Media Remote a straightforward plug‑and‑play accessory.

Microsoft included this initial Media Remote in some Premium (Pro) console bundles. This Japanese remote, only different by button labels, shipped with the Japanese Pro bundle equivalent, which was the only console version available at Japanese launch. A year later Microsoft released a larger, but similarly designed, Universal Media Remote, sold separately in retail packaging. It was longer and included the complete number pad, additional playback controls, and more comprehensive TV functionality. This early version omitted the full numeric keypad and was designed as a compact sampler accessory to highlight the console’s DVD playback and dashboard navigation features. Particularly for users outside the US, this smaller unit was ideal for the functionality that was available.
