A comedic horror‑themed action adventure centred on a young protagonist trapped in a haunted mansion, forced to battle mischievous creatures and solve challenges to escape.
Description
Grabbed by the Ghoulies presents a deliberately lighthearted take on haunted house traditions. The story follows a boy who enters a sprawling mansion to rescue his kidnapped girlfriend, only to confront an array of supernatural adversaries. The setting is structured as a series of interconnected rooms, each introducing new hazards, puzzles, or combat scenarios. The design is accessibile, with simplified controls that allow players to fight off ghosts, skeletons, imps, and other “ghoulies” using intuitive directional inputs. Combat is framed as cartoonish rather than frightening, reinforcing the game’s playful tone. Challenges often impose restrictions, such as defeating enemies within a time limit or avoiding certain hazards.
Visually stylised with an exaggerated aesthetic, characters and environments are rendered to evoke a parody of horror tropes rather than realistic menace. The soundtrack and humour further underline its tongue‑in‑cheek approach, positioning the haunted mansion as a stage for mischief rather than terror. Reception at release was mixed, with some praising its charm and humour while others noted its simplicity compared to more expansive titles. It is notable as the first Rare game on Xbox, after Microsoft acquired the studio. Rare had been a long‑time partner of Nintendo, producing titles across the NES, SNES, and Nintendo 64. So this release marked a turning point in Rare’s history. Over time, Grabbed by the Ghoulies is now seen as a quirky title, with its distinctive tone and its place in the lineage of lighthearted horror adventures. Was re-released within the Rare Replay collection.
