Command & Conquer: Red Alert – The Aftermath

The second expansion pack to Command & Conquer: Red Alert, adding new missions, maps, and experimental units that reshaped the game’s tactical sandbox.

Description

The Aftermath was the second expansion pack for Command & Conquer: Red Alert. Unlike the earlier Counterstrike, which mainly added new missions and maps, The Aftermath introduced a suite of new units and technologies that significantly altered the balance of the game. It was distributed for MS‑DOS and Windows 95/98, and later incorporated into the PlayStation compilation Red Alert: Retaliation.

The expansion added eighteen new single‑player missions, split evenly between Allied and Soviet campaigns, alongside more than one hundred multiplayer maps. These maps were designed to broaden the strategic possibilities of skirmish play, and many were created in collaboration with Intelligent Games. The most striking addition, however, was the roster of new units. The Allies gained access to the Chrono Tank, Phase Transport, and Field Mechanic, while the Soviets received the MAD Tank, Missile Submarine, Tesla Tank, and Shock Trooper. Both sides could deploy the Demolition Truck, a vehicle carrying a nuclear payload. These units introduced mechanics that were eccentric and experimental, pushing the alternate‑history Cold War setting into more imaginative territory.

The soundtrack was also expanded, with Frank Klepacki contributing new tracks that reinforced the industrial‑techno atmosphere of the original game. Taken together, the missions, maps, and units made The Aftermath feel less like a minor add‑on and more like a substantial reworking of Red Alert’s tactical sandbox. The Aftermath is the point where Red Alert shifted from being a straightforward real‑time strategy game into a playground for experimental design. Its units were sometimes unbalanced but always memorable, and they gave multiplayer a new layer of unpredictability. The expansion remains part of the official canon, preserved in later compilations and remaster projects, and it continues to be cited by fans as one of the boldest examples of Westwood’s willingness to innovate within its established formula.
