Battlefield V
A World War II shooter that blends squad‑based multiplayer, destructible environments, and historical vignettes. Battlefield V introduces new mechanics like fortifications, expanded player customisation, and dynamic operations across multiple maps.
Description
Battlefield V follows Battlefield 1’s World War I setting with a thematic shift to World War II, but focuses on lesser‑known theatres and stories. The game’s campaign is divided into “War Stories,” short single‑player episodes that explore personal narratives from Norway, North Africa, France, and Germany. These stories are voiced in native languages and aim to humanise the conflict rather than glorify it.
Multiplayer is the heart of Battlefield V. It supports up to 64 players in modes like Conquest, Breakthrough, and Grand Operations. Grand Operations simulate multi‑day battles across different maps and objectives, culminating in a “Final Stand” if the match is closely contested. The game introduces Combined Arms, a cooperative mode for up to four players, and Firestorm, a battle royale mode set on the largest map in Battlefield history. Gameplay mechanics emphasise squad coordination and realism. Players can build fortifications, revive squadmates without being medics, and carry limited ammunition, encouraging tactical play. The movement system is more fluid, allowing for diving, vaulting, and sliding. Destruction is dynamic, with buildings collapsing under fire and terrain deforming from explosions.
Customisation is handled through the Company system, where players create and upgrade soldiers with cosmetic items, weapons, and gear. Progression is tied to in‑game challenges and seasonal content. Battlefield V launched with the live service model “Tides of War,” which added new maps, modes, and story content over time without paid expansions. The had solid gunplay and evolving multiplayer. It was one of the earliest titles to adopt ray tracing with the RTX 2000 series. But the title was let down by a lack of content and faced technical issues. The game sold 7.3 million units by the end of 2018 but fell short of EA’s expectations. Support officially ended in mid‑2020, though the game remains active among fans.
