The Crew (Limited Edition)

An online-only racing title that incorporates MMO elements across a massive map representing a scaled United States. Notable for being killed off by Ubisoft leaving the title unplayable, making it a poster-child for the Stop Killing Games political movement.

Description

The Crew is an ambitious open-world racing MMO featuring a massive, scaled-down recreation of the entire contiguous United States, allowing players to drive from the East Coast to the West Coast in real-time, passing through major cities like New York, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles. The gameplay emphasises car specifications, where a single vehicle base can be tuned into Street, Dirt, Raid, Performance, or Circuit specs to handle different terrains and mission types. The narrative follows Alex Taylor as he infiltrates a criminal gang across the country, weaving a 20-hour story campaign directly into the persistent online world.

The Limited Edition was primarily available as a pre-order incentive across retail and digital storefronts. It provided immediate access to three specific vehicles: the BMW Z4 sDrive35is, Dodge Ram SRT-10, and Mini Cooper S, each bundled with a unique set of custom visual and performance parts. Additionally, the edition included 10,000 Crew Credits, the game’s premium currency, to jumpstart vehicle customisation and perk upgrades. On PC, the title offered a technically superior experience to the console versions, supporting 60fps gameplay and significantly higher resolutions, whereas the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions were locked to 30fps at launch.

During its contemporary release, the game received mixed reviews. Critics praised the immense scale and variety of the American map, noting that the sheer size of the playground was unparalleled in the racing genre at the time. However, the game was heavily criticized for its mandatory always-online requirement and the technical glitches that occasionally plagued its servers. Retrospectively, the title has become a focal point of intense controversy regarding digital ownership. In December 2023, Ubisoft delisted the game, and on March 31, 2024, the servers were permanently shut down. Because the game lacked an offline mode, the retail discs and digital files were rendered completely unplayable, even for single-player content. As of early 2026, there are community-led preservation efforts with the The Crew Unlimited (TCU) project successfully developing a server emulator for the PC version. This community effort has essentially bypassed the programmed obsolescence of the original client, making the PC release the only viable way to experience the title following its official decommission.
