Buffy the Vampire Slayer

A supernatural combat game focused on vampire hunting and martial arts. An Xbox-exclusive, that showcased the console’s capacity to render complex lighting and fluid character animations.

Description

Buffy the Vampire Slayer follows Buffy Summers as she battles a plot by The Master to return to the physical world through a bridge between dimensions. Players navigate iconic locations such as Sunnydale High School and the Bronze while fighting various undead and demonic enemies. The story functions as a stand alone episode set during the third season of the television series and features dialogue written by regular contributors to the show. Most of the original cast members provided their voices for the game, though a soundalike was used for the protagonist.

Gameplay focuses on a deep combat system that allows players to perform combinations of punches, kicks, and weapon strikes. A central mechanic involves the necessity of staking vampires after their health is depleted, which requires the player to carry wooden stakes or use broken furniture. Environmental interaction is a key feature, as players can throw enemies into sunlight, onto wall spikes, or through windows. This title is comparable to contemporary licensed games, like Dark Angel based on the James Cameron show featuring Jessica Alba, and J. J. Abrams’ Alias starring Jennifer Garner.

Contemporary reviewers praised the game for its sophisticated animation and the authentic portrayal of the television source material. Critics frequently noted that it was one of the first licensed titles to offer a high quality action experience that appealed to fans and non fans alike. Retrospectively although far from a perfect game, it was a standout exclusive for the Xbox platform for a highly franchise. It was both a component 3D fighter that implemented vampire lore into satisfying combat mechanics. It received a sequel titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds which released on multiple platforms.

Item note: both UK and EU versions (including this Finnish/Nordic version) were imported into Australia and relabelled. It seems like several copies were sold with the incorrect G rating label, while others were re-labelled with its correct rating.
