Jet Set Radio Future

ジェットセットラジオフューチャー

A stylish action‑platformer where you play as members of the GG’s, a street gang of skaters who spread graffiti across Tokyo‑to while battling rival crews and the oppressive Rokkaku police. The game expands the original’s formula with freer movement, no time limits, and more fluid tagging mechanics.

Description

Jet Set Radio Future is both a sequel and a reimagining of the Dreamcast’s Jet Set Radio. The story unfolds in an alternate timeline where the GG’s recruit new members and fight to reclaim Tokyo‑to from rival gangs and the corporate‑backed Rokkaku Group. Gameplay revolves around skating through expansive, interconnected districts. Players grind rails, wall‑ride, perform tricks, and use boosts to maintain momentum. Graffiti tagging is streamlined compared to the original: instead of mimicking analogue stick motions, you spray over multiple targets to complete tags. The removal of time limits allows freer exploration, encouraging players to experiment with movement and discover hidden collectibles such as Graffiti Souls and tapes.

Combat is more direct than before. Rival gangs challenge you to races or trick battles, while police and Rokkaku forces appear in specific areas. You can knock them down and spray them to neutralise threats. The game also introduces multiplayer modes, including races and tag battles, expanding its appeal as a party title.

Once again, the soundtrack is a defining feature, blending funk, hip‑hop, J‑pop, and electronic music. Hideki Naganuma returns as lead composer, joined by Richard Jacques and others, creating a mix that perfectly matches the game’s rebellious, high‑energy tone.

Jet Set Radio Future was praised for its art direction, music, and sense of style. Its cel‑shaded visuals remains iconic, and its freer structure makes it more approachable than its predecessor. While some lament the loss of the original’s time‑pressure challenge, the sequel is often remembered as one of the Xbox’s most distinctive exclusives.
