Hey! Pikmin
Hey! ピクミンA side-scrolling platformer spin-off, deviating from the usual Pikmin puzzle adventure. Once again Captain Olimar finds himself stranded on an unknown planet after his spaceship crashes, needing to collect Sparklium by guiding Pikmin through 2D stages rather than managing them in real‑time strategy environments.
Description
Hey! Pikmin reimagines the series’ mechanics within a 2.5D framework, shifting away from the multitasking and resource management of the mainline entries. The story begins with Captain Olimar crash‑landing on an unfamiliar planet after his ship, the S.S. Dolphin II, is struck by asteroids. To repair the vessel and return home, he must gather 30,000 units of Sparklium, a fuel source found in seeds and treasures scattered across the landscape.
Gameplay unfolds as Olimar explores side‑scrolling levels, encountering Pikmin that join him temporarily within each stage. Unlike the console titles, players do not select which Pikmin to bring; instead, they use whatever types are discovered along the way. Olimar cannot attack directly, relying on Pikmin to defeat enemies, carry objects, and solve environmental puzzles. Familiar varieties such as Red, Yellow, Blue, Rock, and Winged Pikmin appear, each retaining their characteristic abilities. Olimar himself can swim and use a jetpack to reach new areas, adding light platforming elements to the design. Between stages, rescued Pikmin gather in Pikmin Park, a hub where they can be dispatched to search for additional Sparklium and hidden items. This system provides a sense of progression outside the linear levels, gradually expanding as more Pikmin are collected. The game also integrates amiibo support, including a dedicated Pikmin amiibo released alongside it, which unlocks bonuses and additional Pikmin during play.
The presentation emphasises a gentler, more accessible tone than the main series. Levels are short and self‑contained, with puzzles focused on timing and accurate throws rather than large‑scale strategy. Treasures collected throughout the journey are often everyday household objects, reinforcing the whimsical perspective of Pikmin encountering human artefacts as alien relics. The game is full of visual charm and faithfully replicates the characterisation of Pikmin in a new format, but the mechanics are greatly simplified and there’s a lack of depth compared to the console entries. While it succeeded in adapting the series to handheld play, it has often been regarded as a side experiment rather than a full evolution of the franchise. In retrospect, Hey! Pikmin was the only handheld-exclusive instalment of the series, that attempted to translate the themes of cooperation and exploration into a more traditional platforming structure. It offers a lighter, more approachable take on Pikmin’s world.
