Suishō no Dragon
水晶のA sci‑fi adventure on the Famicom Disk System where you guide Hugh, via an icon‑based point‑and‑click interface, to rescue his kidnapped girlfriend from the mysterious crystal dragon.
Description
Suishō no Dragon (Crystal Dragon) is a 1986 Famicom Disk System point‑and‑click command-style adventure from Square, released under the DOG (Disk Original Group) label. Set in a sci‑fi future, it follows Hugh, whose space voyage with girlfriend Cynthia is interrupted by the attack of a mysterious crystal dragon.
Rescued by a stranger while Cynthia is kidnapped, Hugh must explore alien environments, solve icon‑based puzzles, and uncover the dragon’s secrets to save her. The game stood out for its anime‑style art by Gen Satō (Ginga Hyōryū Vifam and Panzer World Galient), animated sequences produced with Nippon Sunrise (Mobile Suit Gundam), and its unusual icon‑driven interface for the era.
The game is remembered for one of the more infamous bits of Japanese gaming folklore. In 1986 Famimaga (Family Computer Magazine) ran a prank article claiming that in Suishō no Dragon you could trigger a hidden “yakyūken” (strip rock‑paper‑scissors) mini‑game with heroine Cynthia. They even printed a doctored screenshot showing her losing clothes. The whole thing was a planted hoax to catch rival magazines copying their tips without verification. Other publications fell for it, and the rumour spread so widely that it briefly boosted the game’s sales as curious players tried to find the scene.
