An arcade-style Formula One racing game with multiple international circuits, checkpoint-based racing, rival cars, speed management, and a strong emphasis on cornering cleanly without crashing. Released early in the life of the Game Boy.
Description
F1 Race on the Game Boy was developed by Nintendo, adapted from the earlier 1984 Famicom game F1 Race, which was developed by HAL Laboratory. The Game Boy version differs from the Famicom original by adding longer country-themed tracks, different driving mechanics, a temporary speed boost activated with the D-pad, and powersliding through sharp turns.
The gameplay offers a choice between two car types: one with better control and endurance, and another with higher speed but weaker handling. A major feature is multiplayer with support for 1–4 players when used with the Game Boy Four Player Adapter, making it one of the notable early Game Boy titles to support four-player racing. The game also includes Nintendo character cameos. After races, characters such as Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Toad, Bowser, Link, Samus, Pit, and Donkey Kong appear in the Game Boy version.
Unlike the Famicom title (and its Famicom Disk System sequels), the Game Boy title was sold internationally. This game particularly proved the popularity of multi-player racing titles. In the subsequent years Nintendo would move away from this style of racing title upon the massive success of new series released on the Super Famicom.
