A 3D platform game that expands the Donkey Kong series into a large, collectathon‑style adventure, showcasing the console’s technical capabilities and requiring the Expansion Pak accessory.

Description

Donkey Kong 64 is a sprawling 3D platformer in the tradition of its earlier Rare titles like Banjo‑Kazooie. You play as Donkey Kong and four other playable characters: Diddy, Lanky, Tiny, and Chunky, each unique. Progression depends on switching between these characters to access different areas, solve puzzles, and collect hundreds of items, including Golden Bananas, coloured bananas, and blueprints. The hub world is DK Isles, from which players enter themed levels such as Jungle Japes, Frantic Factory, and Crystal Caves. Each stage contains multiple objectives tied to specific characters, encouraging replay and exploration. Boss battles punctuate progression, while mini‑games and multiplayer modes add variety.

The game requires the Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak, making it one of the first titles to mandate the accessory. At the time of release, Donkey Kong 64 received strong reviews for its scale, variety, and technical achievement, though its reliance on excessive item collection could be tedious. Selling over 5 million copies worldwide, it became one of the best‑selling Nintendo 64 titles. A showcase of Rare’s ambition and an emblem of the “collectathon” era of 3D platformers, praised for its scope but often debated for its design philosophy.
