Description
The Taru Konga is a special controller released for the GameCube, designed specifically for rhythm games like Donkey Konga. It takes the form of a pair of plastic bongo drums connected by a central base, with an internal microphone that detects clapping sounds. Players interact by striking the left or right drum, hitting both simultaneously, or clapping to trigger input, translating musical cues into gameplay actions.
Functionally, the Taru Konga transforms rhythm play into a physical performance. Its design emphasises tactile engagement, encouraging players to treat the controller as an instrument rather than a conventional input device. The microphone’s sensitivity to clapping adds a layer of bodily involvement, making rhythm sequences more expressive and immersive.
The controller was bundled with Donkey Konga in Japan and later released in other regions. Reception at the time praised its novelty and accessibility, noting how it broadened the GameCube’s appeal to families and casual audiences. The controller was then reused for Donkey Konga 2, but more notably, also for Donkey Kong Jungle Beat. In Jungle Beat the Taru Konga was repurposed in a strikingly different way. Instead of rhythm input, the bongos became the primary control scheme for an action‑platformer. Players moved Donkey Kong forward by drumming on the left or right side, jumped by striking both simultaneously, and triggered attacks or special actions through clapping. This unconventional use transformed the controller from a rhythm accessory into a full gameplay interface, emphasising physicality and novelty.
The Taru Konga’s legacy influenced later Nintendo experiments with motion and rhythm input, such as the Wii Remote’s gestural controls and the Joy‑Con’s use in Taiko no Tatsujin.
