A jet-ski racing game that was a GameCube launch title. Sequel to be the beloved N64 launch title.
Description
WaveRace: Blue Storm is the sequel to Wave Race 64 (1996, N64), retaining the jet‑ski racing focus but expanding with improved physics, weather effects, and multiplayer options. The game was developed by Nintendo Software Technology (NST) in America. The game was a launch title for the early Japanese launch alongside Luigi Mansion and Super Monkey Ball.
The game features a roster of riders and courses set across tropical, arctic, and urban waterways. A defining element is its dynamic weather system: rain, fog, and rough seas alter handling and visibility, forcing players to adapt their racing style. Controls emphasise precision, with buoy placement requiring tight manoeuvres to maintain speed boosts. Modes include Championship, Time Attack, Stunt, and multiplayer races.
Like its predecessor, Blue Storm was praised for its water simulation, which showcased the new consoles physics and graphical capabilities at launch. Reviews noted the realistic wave physics and reflections, though some criticised the gameplay for being more iterative than revolutionary compared with its predecessor. Retrospectively it is as a solid early GameCube title, valued for its technical demonstration of water effects and for continuing the Wave Race series, though no further sequels followed.
