Pacman VS. (Club Nintendo Limited Edition)

パックマンVS. クラブニンテンドーげんていばん

A special Japanese release of Pac‑Man VS. for the GameCube, distributed exclusively through Club Nintendo as a member reward rather than sold at retail. A regular version was bundled with R:RACING EVOLUTION.

Description

Pac-Man Vs. is a multiplayer-focused reimagining of the arcade classic, representing a landmark collaboration between Namco and Nintendo during the GameCube era. Designed by Shigeru Miyamoto and directed by Tadashi Sugiyama, the title served as a technical showcase for the GameCube-Game Boy Advance Link Cable.

The gameplay leverages asymmetric multiplayer, a concept Nintendo would revisit nearly a decade later with the Wii U. While one player controls Pac-Man in private on the GBA screen, up to three opponents play as ghosts on the television. This hidden-information mechanic creates a high-tension pursuit that remains faithful to the original’s core loop while introducing a competitive social dynamic impossible on a single screen. The disc also contains a number new release software demo movies.

In the West the game was typically a pack-in bonus with Pac-Man World 2 or I-Ninja, this Japanese Club Nintendo Limited Edition was never available for retail purchase. It was distributed exclusively through the “Enjoy Plus” Campaign in late 2003. To redeem a copy, Club Nintendo members were required to register the serial code several specific major holiday on the official website, including: Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Pokémon Colosseum, Mario Party 5, Baten Kaitos, and Donkey Konga. Upon registration between November and December 2003, members received this Not for Sale (非売品) version in a unique yellow cardboard sleeve alongside the Nintendo e-Catalog 2003 Enjoy Plus (Winter), which contained trailers and demos for upcoming 2004 releases.
