Amazing Tennis

アメージングテニス

A sports simulation built around precision timing, positional play, and the spectacle of televised competition.

Description

Amazing Tennis presents a stylised version of professional tennis, placing the player on a full court viewed from a diagonal perspective that mimics broadcast camera angles. The game aims to capture the rhythm and intensity of real matches, with the benefit of the 16-bit hardware. The presentation emphasises the atmosphere of stadium play, complete with crowd reactions and umpire calls, situating the experience as both athletic and performative.

The gameplay features a distinctive lower viewpoint that differs from the traditional overhead or side-on perspectives, common in earlier tennis titles. Players control movement and shot selection with timing-sensitive inputs, producing lobs, volleys, and groundstrokes depending on positioning. The game is often compared with contemporaries such as Super Tennis World Circuit, which offered a more traditional view and faster pacing, highlighting the experimental nature of Amazing Tennis in its visual framing.

For the early 1990s, the game broadcast-style perspective was novel but criticised for the difficulty of judging depth and timing, which made rallies feel awkward for some. Retrospectively the game was an ambitious attempt to differentiate itself within the crowded sports genre. Later 3D tennis games would adopt a similar view perspective, such as Virtua Tennis, but for 2D titles the overhead view remained dominant.
