Description

The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller connects to the system via Bluetooth and offers a full‑size layout similar to contemporary console control pads. It features dual analogue sticks, a D‑pad, four face buttons, shoulder and trigger buttons, and integrated motion sensors. The controller also includes HD rumble, NFC support for amiibo scanning, and a rechargeable battery that charges through a USB‑C port. Its ergonomic design and larger grips make it suitable for extended play sessions compared with the smaller Joy‑Con controllers.

The Pro Controller is effectively compatible with all Nintendo Switch titles, supporting both handheld and docked play. It is particularly effective for genres that benefit from precise inputs, such as action games, fighting games, and shooters. The controller can also be used with PCs through wired or Bluetooth connections, though support varies depending on software.

Compared with its predecessor, the Wii U’s Pro Controller, the changes are iterative but notable. Most telling, it shifted from symmetrical analogue sticks to an offset, Xbox-style layout. Motion controls and NFC support for amiibo from the Wii U Game Pad were added. Haptic feedback was improved, the Bluetooth radios used newer standards, and the wired port moved from the USB-Mini (not Micro!) to USB-C. This did come at the loss of battery life. The Wii U Pro Controller was widely noted for its exceptionally long endurance, often lasting up to 80 hours on a single charge. By contrast, the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller averages half that. Quite a reduction but still substantially more than PlayStation or Xbox.

The Pro Controller has been praised for its build quality, comfortable design, and long battery life. For many players, myself included, value it as a reliable and necessary alternative to Joy‑Cons. It is one of the console’s most essential accessories, providing a stable and familiar control option that complements the Switch’s hybrid design.
