Super Mario Maker 2 is the sequel to the Wii U’s Super Mario Maker. Like the original, it allows players to create their own 2D Mario stages using assets from across the series — including Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros. U. A major addition is the Super Mario 3D World style, re‑engineered into 2.5D, which introduces unique mechanics such as the Super Bell power‑up, clear pipes, and Cat Mario.

The game expands the toolset with slopes, on/off switches, new course themes (desert, snow, forest, sky), and a day/night toggle that alters stage behaviour. It also introduces vertical scrolling levels, improved enemy behaviours, and more advanced contraptions, giving creators greater flexibility. Beyond creation, the game introduces a robust Story Mode with over 100 Nintendo‑designed courses, where players help rebuild Princess Peach’s castle. Multiplayer is another key feature: up to four players can play co‑operatively or competitively, both locally and online. Online functionality also enables sharing and rating of user‑created levels, as well as participating in Ninji Speedruns, time‑trial challenges with global leaderboards.

This Limited Edition is identical to the regular edition except it included a 12 month subscription code for Nintendo Online for an extra AU$15 price over the regular edition. No Steelbook covers with AU release. Notably, there was also a major pre-order bonus bundle: the SMM2 branded stylus and sketchpad. The game was extremely well received for its depth, creativity, and accessibility, and sold over 8.4 million copies as of 2022, making it one of the best‑selling Switch titles.
