GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U
GCコントローラ 接続タップセットA four-port controller adapter that connects original Nintendo GameCube controllers to the Wii U for use with Super Smash Bros., preserving the established tournament control layout while supporting local matches with up to eight players when two adapters are connected.
Description
GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U was created to support the lasting association between the GameCube controller and competitive Super Smash Bros. play. Its compact black casing carries four numbered controller sockets, allowing returning players to use familiar hardware rather than move to the Wii U GamePad, Wii Remote, or Wii U Pro Controller.
The adapter connects to the Wii U through two fixed USB leads and accepts standard GameCube controllers, WaveBird wireless receivers, and officially licensed equivalents. The black USB plug carries controller data and must be connected for operation, while the grey plug supplies additional power for rumble and may be omitted when vibration is not required. One adapter supports four controllers, and two units can operate together for eight-player battles, although this arrangement occupies four USB ports and may require a powered USB hub. DK Bongos, steering wheels, and other non-standard GameCube peripherals are not officially supported.
Smash Bros. DX established the GameCube controller as the preferred input device for series veterans. The Wii retained native GameCube controller ports on early models, but the Wii U removed that hardware connection, making a dedicated adapter necessary when Super Smash Bros. for Wii U returned to the older control standard. As a non-standard controller interface it was not supported by other games or the system OS.
The adapter was received as an essential accessory by established Super Smash Bros. players, particularly those who preferred the GameCube controller’s octagonal analogue gate, large central A button, and distinctive shoulder inputs. Its narrow official compatibility attracted criticism and made the product less versatile than its packaging initially suggested, but reliable operation and support for four wired controllers gave it lasting practical value. The same hardware concept continued with Smash Bros. Ultimate on Nintendo Switch, extending the life of controllers first introduced more than a decade earlier. It finally became more broadly supported many years later with the Switch 2 console, which launched with GameCube Nintendo Classics, enabling emulated GameCube titles to played with original controller hardware.
