Super Mario Galaxy 2

スーパーマリオギャラクシー2

A brilliantly refined, level-design-focused 3D platformer remembered for iterating on its perfect prequel. It originated as an expansion pack before growing into a stand alone, arguably superior, masterpiece.

Description

Super Mario Galaxy 2 saw Nintendo deliver a rare direct sequel to their monumental platformer Super Mario Galaxy. Nintendo’s developers were so overflowing with unused level concepts from the first game, the development of an expansion, originally conceptualised as “Super Mario Galaxy More”, became a full sequel. It actively stripped away the cinematic narrative and grand hub-world exploration of the original, replacing the sprawling Comet Observatory with a straightforward, retro-style world map navigated via “Starship Mario”. The game is entirely focused on propelling players immediately into the action.

The gameplay is built around the same revolutionary spherical gravity and pointer controls as its predecessor, but dialled up to a relentless, intensely creative degree. The core progression relies on tighter, more challenging platforming sequences and the triumphant reintroduction of Yoshi to the 3D Mario universe. Yoshi’s mechanics are seamlessly integrated, allowing players to use the Wii Remote’s pointer to eat enemies, swing from flower pegs, and utilise specialised fruits for speed boosts or temporary hovering. The game also introduces imaginative new power-ups, such as the Cloud Flower for creating mid-air platforms and the Rock Mushroom for bowling over environmental obstacles.

Like its predecessor, Super Mario Galaxy 2 received universal and historic critical acclaim, frequently tying or slightly edging out the original in contemporary reviews. Magazine and online reviewers lauded the sheer density of pure platforming joy, noting that the streamlined pacing kept the game constantly moving from one fresh idea to the next. While it may have lacked the initial mind-bending shock of the 2007 original, it was highly praised for its increased difficulty curve, particularly the gruelling “Green Star” endgame challenge that demanded absolute mastery of the mechanics. Retrospectively, it is one of the tightest, most inventive platformers ever created, and an essential piece of the Wii library.
