Video Link Cable

A 9‑pin mini‑DIN patch cable supplied with the 32X add‑on, used to route the Mega Drive/Genesis video output into the 32X unit. This connection was required for the 32X to overlay its own graphics onto the base console’s signal before passing the combined output to the television.

Description

The 32X hardware relied on a pass‑through video system. To function, the 32X had to receive the Mega Drive’s RGB and composite video first, process it internally, and then output a combined feed through its own AV port. This was achieved via a short 9‑pin to 9‑pin mini‑DIN patch cable. Without this cable, the 32X could not display video correctly, resulting in a blank or distorted screen.

This patch cable was designed to connect the Mega Drive 2 and not the larger 8‑pin DIN output on the original Mega Drive. For original Mega Drive/Genesis units, the Conversion Cable (P/N: 600-6412) is also which bridged between the console and this video link cable.

The cable carried RGB video, composite video, and sync signals, while audio was handled separately depending on the console model (for example, Model 1 units often required a separate stereo patch from the headphone jack). Because the 32X was bundled with these cables, many aftermarket units found today are incomplete, making original patch cables and adapters sought‑after. Modern reproductions are available, ensuring continued usability of the 32X hardware.
