An open‑wheel racing sim based on the 1998 CART FedEx Championship Series, featuring all 19 tracks, 27 drivers, and 18 teams from the season, officially licensed by the now‑defunct Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) league.
Description
Super Speed Racing launched in Japan in March 1999, with the North American version, retitled CART: Flag to Flag, arriving later that year as part of the Dreamcast’s early lineup. It aimed to deliver an authentic recreation of late‑90s American open‑wheel racing, complete with real‑world circuits like Long Beach, Michigan, and the iconic streets of Surfers Paradise, alongside the full roster of licensed drivers and teams from the 1998 season.
The game offers a variety of modes, including quick arcade‑style races, full‑length championship seasons, and time trials. Players can tweak race length, weather, damage, and pit stop strategies, blending accessible handling with simulation‑style options. Multiple camera views including immersive cockpit and helmet perspectives add to the realism, while animated pit crews and visible car damage (like losing front or rear wings) enhance the presentation.
While its official license and faithful track list made for an authentic experience, Super Speed Racing had modest graphics and frankly terrible handling compared to other Dreamcast racers, Ubisoft’s Monaco GP 2 was a good comparison. Today, it’s remembered as a niche but notable entry in the console’s racing library, especially for fans of the CART era.
